Biography

Jacob Herrmann received the Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from University of Iowa in 2018, mentored by David W. Kaczka.  His thesis work focused on respiratory mechanics and ventilation heterogeneity in acute lung injury, in particular using computational simulation and medical imaging techniques.  Herrmann and Kaczka founded OscillaVent, Inc., together and acquired STTR funding to translate their research findings into a clinically viable medical device for multi-frequency oscillatory ventilation.

Jacob continued academic training in postdoctoral fellowships at Boston University, mentored by Béla Suki, and later at University of Iowa, mentored by Edward A. Sander.  These research efforts focused on multiscale modeling and microscale biomechanical experimentation.

Jacob's overall research interests surround measurement, modeling, and control of dynamical systems, especially those involving multiscale phenomena or emergent behavior from complex heterogeneous structures.  The Herrmann lab investigates the multiscale dynamics of the lungs that drive lung injury and disease progression, at size scales ranging from organ-level mechanics down to the interactions between individual collagen and elastin fibers.
